Plants are not free to produce their own growth without the sun, rain,
and nutrients from the soil that are given them freely. In that sense we
are not free to perfect ourselves by our own efforts (Romans 7:15-24).
Luther called this "the bondage of the will."
What is different about humans in the image of God is that we have the
awesome freedom to reject the sun (the love of the Father) and rain
(the Holy Spirit) and other nutrients (Jesus the Bread of Life
that God offers us freely.
